Mike van der Hoorn holds fresh Swansea City contract talks as defender discusses future aims

Swansea City have opened contract talks with defender Mike van der Hoorn.

The central defender was set to be out of contract this summer, although the Swans triggered a one-year extension clause in the Dutchman's deal in April to ensure that he will remain in South Wales for another year.

Prior to that clause being activated, van der Hoorn revealed that he had previously been set to sign a two-year deal with the Swans, although that fell through after former chairman Huw Jenkins left the club.

But speaking after his side's van der Hoorn revealed that he has held discussions with the top brass at the Liberty Stadium over his current situation, although he admits he's in no rush to sort his long-term future.

“There have been talks but nothing has been agreed yet. For Swansea and for me it’s an important period coming up," said the 26-year-old.

“We will just see how things go, see how the selection turns out to be in the new season and go from there. For now it’s about getting fit, getting used to the new manager and maybe some new players.

“There have been some talks but nothing has been put on paper. There is some chatting about it but it’s a very low level now. We are not rushing anything.”

The former Ajax defender excelled under Graham Potter last season and captained the Swans in the absence of regular skipper Leroy Fer who has since departed.

However, Wayne Routledge had the armband in the friendly win over Mansfield Town while even though van der Hoorn featured in both of those pre-season victories.

But van der Hoorn remains an integral part of Steve Cooper's plans, with the Swansea manager set to decide on his skipper ahead of the Championship fixture with Hull City on August 3.

Given his short-term deal along with the Swans' precarious financial position, many supporters feared the centre-back could leave South Wales this summer.

But van der Hoorn admits he is fully focused on the season ahead with Swansea having revealed there have been no "concrete" offers from elsewhere for his services.

“There hasn’t been anything concrete. That’s really low as well," added van der Hoorn.

“If it comes by it comes by. They would first have to agree with Swansea.

“For me it’s just about getting my head on Swansea because that’s where I am and that’s where my contract is. That’s where I am thinking about.”
