MIAMI _ The Angels' 10-game trip down the East Coast ended in disturbing fashion on Sunday.
Mike Trout left the game after spraining his left thumb. Trout underwent X-rays, which showed no fracture. There was no immediate word on how much time he might miss.
That was merely one of the negatives on a day the Angels' lost 9-2 to the Miami Marlins, because of a rough outing from Matt Shoemaker and a failure to convert offensive opportunities.
Trout's left hand hit the bag on a head-first slide into second on a stolen base in the fifth inning. He then popped up and began shaking his hand and grimacing in pain. Trainer Adam Nevala and manager Mike Scioscia came out to check on him, but he remained in the game and played the bottom of the fifth in center field.
When the Angels took the field in the bottom of the sixth, Trout was out of the game.
Earlier this month, Trout missed five straight games, and six out of seven, with a hamstring issue. It was the longest time he had been out since becoming an everyday player in April 2012. He has never been on the disabled list.
Even while Trout was in the game, the Angels couldn't capitalize on the opportunities that they were given by Jose Urena's six walks.
In the third and fourth, the Angels left the bases loaded. They did score their only two runs on a Martin Maldonado homer in the fourth, before Urena walked the bases loaded.
Andrelton Simmons, who later in the game extended his hitting streak to 10 games, came up twice with the bases loaded and didn't drive in any runs. Trout also grounded out to leave them loaded in the third.
In the fifth and sixth, the Angels got their leadoff man on base and hit into double plays.
They failed to generate a cushion for Shoemaker, who gave up four runs, on two more homers, in 4 2/3 innings.
Shoemaker left pitches over the middle of the plate to Giancarlo Stanton and J.T. Riddle. Stanton blasted a solo homer in the first and Riddle hit a two-run shot, to snap a 2-2 tie, in the fifth.
The Angels have allowed 76 homers, the most in the majors.
