In appreciation of Mike Trout’s consistent greatness, Mike Trout Monday is For The Win’s weekly roundup of stuff Mike Trout did.
Hey, this is fun: While the Angels were playing in Baltimore last June, Mike Trout spotted a young fan named Gavin Edelson wearing a Trout jersey during batting practice and invited him to join the team for pregame stretches. Edelson then asked Trout to hit a home run in the game, and, predictably, Trout hit a home run in the game.
At ESPN.com, Jeff Passan has a lengthy feature on Edelson’s love for the best player in baseball, and it’s well worth your time. Edelson wears Trout jerseys to school every day — his Troutfits — and reads about Trout every night before he goes to bed.
So obviously the Edelson family made the trip to Camden Yards again when the Angels came back to town on Friday, and 7-year-old Gavin got to meet with Trout again, and this year, again, Mike Trout told Edelson he’d homer and did.
We do not know, of course, whether Mike Trout promises homers to adorable young super-fans every day and disappoints many of them, but there’s no fun whatsoever in that and I choose to believe Trout has the capacity to homer whenever there’s a kid in the stands pulling for it hard enough. The Angels should just hire Gavin Edelson to come to every game for his entire summer break, really.
Trout also homered later in the series finale Sunday.
Mike Trout Monday was on vacation last week, but in the two weeks since our last update, Trout posted a .928 OPS despite a .231 batting average on balls in play, suggesting misfortune. He remains atop the American League WAR leaderboard with a 3.0 mark in the stat for 2019.
