Mike Tomlin 'optimistic' the Steelers will be healthy for playoff game vs. Chiefs

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers don’t appear to have any major injury concerns heading into the AFC wild-card game in Kansas City on Sunday night.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said he is optimistic running back Najee Harris, linebacker Robert Spillane and cornerback Arthur Maulet can recover in time to play in the Steelers’ first road playoff game since the 2016 AFC championship against New England.

Harris injured his elbow early in the first quarter of the regular season finale against the Ravens and did not return until the fourth quarter and overtime. Harris, who usually plays most of the snaps, was on the field for just 40 of the 76 offensive snaps against the Ravens.

When Harris came back into the game, he made some big plays for the Steelers, including a 15-yard run in overtime that set up the winning field goal by Chris Boswell.

Tomlin noted Harris might not practice early in the week, but said, “We’ll let his participation and how he feels be our guide.”

Maulet, the slot corner, played only 18 of the 71 defensive snaps after being taken out of the game to be evaluated for a concussion.

Spillane played 48 snaps at inside linebacker and dealt with a knee injury late in the regular season, as well.

Tomlin also said offensive linemen Dan Moore and Kendrick Green could get more of an opportunity to prove they are ready to play this week. Moore missed the Ravens game with an ankle injury while Green dressed but did not play his usual center position.

J.C. Hassenauer has played center the past two games and has performed well, Tomlin said.

“I just appreciate J.C., his professional approach, his communication skills, his desire to be a hub of communication,” Tomlin said. “It’s been a few good weeks for him.”

Veteran Joe Haeg replaced Moore at left tackle and Tomlin had some similar praise for him.

“Joe is a pro,” Tomlin said. “He is a Swiss Army knife because of his position flexibility and his availability. He did a great job and we’re appreciative of his efforts.”

Receiver James Washington remains in the COVID-19 protocol, but he could be activated back onto the active roster this week.
