Mike Tindall reveals what was really hidden under his hat - and made the Queen giggle

It was one of the more intriguing moments of the opening day at Royal Ascot .

While greeting the Queen, Mike Tindall made her giggle by pulling something out of his top hat .

Was he trying to curry favour by performing a magic trick?  Was it a cheeky snack for later?

A video of the moment was shared on  Twitter  by ITV racing, and fans tried their best to guess what the tiny hat actually was.

Some popular suggestions included cheese, a dinky cupcake and even a large Nespresso capsule.

There was much speculation - but no definitive answer.

Happily, since the top hat reveal, Tindall has shed some light on this all-important issue.

The Queen's grandson-in-law explained what was happening to The Telegraph’s royal correspondent Camilla Tominey, saying that the item was a gift for his daughter.

The younger royals were seen having a laugh (REX)

"It is a chocolate hat that I am taking home for my daughter Mia," he said. "I was given it at lunch but it is really annoying to store in a pocket so I decided to put it in my top hat instead."

As for whether Her Maj found this funny, when asked this Tindall replied: "They are your words, not mine!"
