Mike Phelan has told Manchester United's fans the team will bounce back from Tuesday night's humbling Champions League quarter-final loss to Barcelona.
United were outclassed in Catalonia as a Lionel Messi brace and a trademark Philippe Coutinho long-ranger secured a 4-0 aggregate win for the Spanish champions.
United flew back to Manchester straight after the match to begin their preparations for Sunday's Premier League trip to Goodison Park.
The Reds are currently on a run of five defeats in seven matches and Phelan was feeling pensive on Wednesday morning.
"On the journey to being the best you’ve got to experience the best," he tweeted. "Is it just a loss or is it also a lesson? We will be back."
United's aggregate defeat was the club's heaviest ever in a two-legged European tie and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer acknowledged work needs to be done in this summer's transfer window to get the club back on top.
"We're on with the job and have spoken to the players about it as well," Solskjaer said of United's need to improve. "That we need to get the best out of each other, create an environment of top, top, top-class attitude, world-class attitude every single day. Because we've got good players and I've got good players to work with.
"And, as I said, at the moment we've done really, really well to get to the quarters and challenge for top four. So we've got a rebuilding job but it starts with the coaches and players, and of course one or two additions to the squad will happen in the summer."
