Mike Phelan identifies the Manchester United trait that needs improving in pre-season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff are trying to improve the mental toughness of the Manchester United squad during pre-season.

United fell apart towards the end of last season, winning just two of their final 12 games in all competitions to finish sixth in the Premier League.

The coaching staff have identified a weakness in the mentality of the squad that needs improving during the summer, with United often starting games well before fading late on.

While most pundits have put that down to a lack of fitness in the squad, assistant manager Mike Phelan believes it is partly due to mentality as well, something that can be rectified during pre-season.

“It's not just fitness. We want them to be mentally tough as well to experience what it really is about Manchester United - it's right to the end, from start to finish," Phelan said

Manchester United open training session ahead of pre-season friendly vs Leeds

"We had periods in games where we looked really at it and really strong but then faded. We need to get that Man United back, that goes right the way through 96 minutes, which is a game of football nowadays, and we're preparing them for that.

"The players have to understand how it feels to be fatigued and then go again. We're trying to get that into them, both in their minds and in their bodies."

United have spent the last 10 days training in Perth. They conclude the Australian leg of their pre-season tour with a friendly against Leeds at the Optus Stadium tomorrow, before heading on to Singapore and Shanghai.

It's been a gruelling spell of training in Australia for the United squad, coming on top of a week at Carrington before they set off on tour, and Phelan believes the players are responding to the demands being placed on them.

"We're piecing everything together," he told the club's official website .

"We've asked the players to do more and we're getting that response from them. You can see the intensity in training is high. We need to keep pushing and pushing. We're not just preparing them for the first game of the season [against Chelsea on 11 August] but preparing them for the season.

"We all know last season was difficult - a great start but poor finish. We need to make sure now that the energy, stamina and enthusiasm is in the players right from the start."
