Mike Phelan appointed Man United assistant manager as search for technical director continues

Mike Phelan has finally been confirmed as Manchester United’s assistant manager - ending talk of him taking over as technical director.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant was a leading contender to take a wider view of United’s long-term transfer strategy – but Solskjaer was reluctant to lose him from his coaching staff.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward explored the possibility of a dual role – but the preference was always to have a dedicated appointment as the club’s first technical director.

That has resulted in Phelan signing a three-year contract to work alongside Solskjaer and the rest of his coaching team including Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Mark Dempsey.

Solskjaer said: “Mike is a great person to have around and has been invaluable to me since we returned in December. He brings a wealth of experience to this role with a long established connection to the club.

“We have a good group of coaching staff and we are already working on the challenges that lie ahead of us as we plan for the new season and the future beyond.”

Phelan added: “I am thrilled to be back as assistant manager. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life since I joined as a player in 1989 and I am delighted to be able to continue that relationship in this key role.

“Since returning in December, I have enjoyed working with Ole, Michael, Kieran, Mark and Emilio and we we are all focused on preparing for the new season.”
