Mike McCarthy Responds to Not Knowing About Cowboys’ Trey Lance Trade Prior to Deal

The Cowboystrade for 49ers quarterback Trey Lance last week came about quickly, Dallas owner Jerry Jones has stated.

In the process, Jones admitted he didn’t give starting quarterback Dak Prescott a heads-up before making the move. Additionally, coach Mike McCarthy wasn’t told about the team’s final decision before it happened.

Some were surprised that McCarthy wouldn’t be more involved in the actual decision to trade for Lance. However, it sounds like the coach is unbothered by what happened.

“I was involved in the evaluation and but the actual business component of it I am not involved,” McCarthy said, via Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill Jr. “Those decisions come down to Jerry and Stephen [Jones, Cowboys CEO].”

Prescott gave similar comments a few days ago, stating that he understood that “it’s a business.”

Regardless of how the trade went about, Dallas will now have a former first-round quarterback in the room to help Prescott and backup Cooper Rush.

Lance was downgraded to the third-string quarterback position in San Francisco, which prompted trade talks. Last season, the 2021 No. 3 pick was named the starter, but he only made it to Week 2 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. He was jumped on the 49ers depth chart by Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold this summer.
