On Wednesday at the 2019 NFL Combine, New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said the team is happy to have the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, but also acknowledged that they are open to trading it away.
“Right now, we feel good at No. 3, but I’d definitely say if there’s an opportunity to trade down, we would absolutely look at it,” Maccagnan told reporters.
The New York Giants, meanwhile, own the No. 6 overall pick in the draft and may very well find themselves in a position where they need to trade up for Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray or Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins should they decide one of those two are their target.
So, what about a potential Giants-Jets swap? It’s a discussion that usually gets tossed out the window in short order, but Maccagnan, surprisingly, seemed more than open to the idea.
Depending on how things shake out in free agency, the Giants and the Jets may very well find themselves in a situation where they could benefit each other. It would be an interesting scenario filled with posturing, but a draft day trade between the two might make sense — at least in these early stages.
Based on the NFL Draft value chart, the No. 3 overall pick is worth 2,200 points while the No. 6 overall pick is worth 1,600 points, so the Giants would have a lot to make up in order to make that climb. And with no third-round pick, they’d likely have to trade their second-round pick and then a little more.
It will be interesting to see if a deal eventually gets batted around between Gang Green and Big Blue, but at least for now, the possibility is on the table.
