Mike Leach is baffled by people who hate cats, and his explanation is gold

Nothing beats an in-depth, long-winded answer from Mike Leach about some random topic that has absolutely nothing to do with football.

Our latest example of random Mike Leach takes is about cats. Specifically, the Washington State football coach is bewildered that some people don’t like cats. It’s not that some people prefer dogs to cats but more that cats somehow generate so much hate on their own.

The point is that Leach can’t figure it out, and he tweeted his confusion about cats Tuesday.

(For what it’s worth, he does coach the Cougars, an animal in the feline family, so maybe he thinks people dislike all cats and not just house pets.)

After Leach’s tweet received a lot more attention than normal on the internet, the football coach was asked about it at practice Wednesday. And like he does, Leach gave an extraordinary, detailed answer.

“Somebody said that in passing, you know, ‘I hate cats.’ You know, somebody really hates cats, and I’ve never figured that one out. And credit to cats — the ability to generate that much animosity, you know. And I’m not sure how close of a relationship some of these people are planning to have with a cat or why they would value the opinion of a cat or their perceived opinion of a cat.

“I’m indifferent about cats, but I’ve just never understood how a cat can accelerate that much animosity. I mean, to me, it’s just a cat, it’s just a squirrel, it’s just a dove, it’s just a robin. I mean, what do I care?”

The question and Leach’s cat thoughts start at the 1:20 mark:

Makes you wonder about Leach’s opinion of other animals, like hedgehogs or chameleons or anteaters or koala bears or lizards or donkeys.

We know he likes dogs, he shared a story about the time he tracked a raccoon in the snow, he and his staff catch sea monsters when fishing, he loves Colorado’s buffalo mascot Ralphie and has used Sasquatch for inspirational quotes.

Hopefully, we’ll get more Mike Leach takes about animals this football season.
