Mike Groh candidate to coach Bears quarterbacks

Jan. 20--John Fox didn't take long to promote Dowell Loggains to offensive coordinator after Adam Gase departed to become the coach of the Miami Dolphins.

But the Chicago Bears have yet to name a quarterbacks coach since Loggains was elevated Jan. 11.

Wide receivers coach Mike Groh is an in-house candidate. Groh was one of two position coaches retained by Fox from the previous regime and has worked with the team's receivers for the past two seasons. He was a two-year starter at quarterback at the University of Virginia and has been an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the college level.

Another potential hire is former Louisville quarterback Dave Ragone, who worked with Loggains for three seasons in Tennessee and has NFL experience coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers. But Ragone was hired by the Washington Redskins as an offensive quality control assistant last February, and his contract status is not known. If he's signed through 2016, the Redskins could block a request by the Bears. It's common for assistant coaches to sign two-year contracts.

Ragone was the Titans quarterbacks coach in 2013 when Loggains was the offensive coordinator. Ragone served as the team's wide receivers coach in 2011 and 2012. A third-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2003, he spent parts of four seasons in the NFL as a player.

The Bears coaching staff is expected to attend the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, next week. It's not necessary for Fox to have his staff finalized by then but he could avoid the deluge of out-of-work coaches seeking a job if things are wrapped up. He could also take the opportunity to meet with a prospective candidate.
