ESPN’s Mike Greenberg wants more criticism. He wants more anger. And he wants more frustration.
Greenberg, a notorious Jets fan, appeared on ESPN’s Get Up! on Tuesday morning, and suggested the New York is getting a free pass for their bungling of the 2019 offseason. He argued that they are no better than the Los Angeles Lakers, who have been the subject of immense criticism since the inexplicable resignation of Magic Johnson, the team’s former president of basketball operations.
“This is completely mishandled,” Greenberg said, pointing to New York’s decision to fire general manager Mike Maccagnan after the organization allowed him to complete the 2019 NFL Draft, in which the Jets had the No. 3 overall pick, and free agency, for which they had $101 million to spend.
There are some logical reasons why the Jets decided to fire Maccagnan so late in the offseason. It’s tough to undergo turnover at the start of an offseason, as a new general manager is often left with the previous general manager’s staff of scouts. But with so much money and draft capital, it is hard to understand why the Jets didn’t fire Maccagnan at this point during the 2017 offseason. The Jets left the now-fired general manger to spend on players, which their current coach Adam Gase reportedly didn’t deem worth the money.
So, which team is a bigger dumpster fire: the Lakers or the Jets?
