Keir Starmer’s call to “reclaim” the St George’s flag didn’t go down well with everyone, especially not with TalkTV’s Mike Graham, who slammed the Prime Minister during a fiery St George’s Day segment.
The Labour leader recently voiced concerns that the far-right had hijacked the flag’s meaning, saying, “I do understand the fight over the flag, but that’s why we’ve got to reclaim it. It belongs to all of us.” He referenced last year’s riots following the Southport stabbings, fuelled by misinformation, and warned that symbols like the flag can be powerful when misused, reported The Express.
But on TalkTV, Mike wasn’t buying it. “Keir Starmer has apparently reclaimed, he says, the St George’s flag. We didn’t need to reclaim the St George’s flag—he just needed to stop telling some of his inner circle and Labour MPs not to diss people who fly it!” he said, kicking off his segment with a pointed “Morning!” to his guest, Tory MP Esther McVey.
Esther was quick to agree. “Exactly right. When he said he’s reclaiming the flag I thought, from who? It can only be the wobbly woke people he’s in charge of that suddenly feel the need to ‘reclaim’ it—no one else was.”
She went on to explain that those who celebrate St George’s Day already take pride in doing so and don’t need political permission. “He now is trying to be—and I put the effort on trying—to be patriotic,” she said.
Taking a deeper swipe, she continued: “He’s not a leader, is he, Mike? He’s not a leader at all. He just reads whatever script he’s given that day by Morgan McSweeney and goes, ‘Today I must talk about being patriotic.’”
Esther didn’t stop there. She accused Starmer of “gaslighting” the public, saying one thing about patriotism while doing something entirely different when it comes to supporting veterans and traditional values. “It’s like, ‘I’ll talk about this, but actually I’m going to deliver something else, and I’m not going to be patriotic at all.’”
Starmer’s comments were clearly meant to unite the public under a shared identity—but if the reaction from TalkTV is anything to go by, the flag debate is far from over.
