Mike Denver column: 'Nobody should have to suffer at hands of workplace bullies while trying to earn a living'

I know from my previous career as a plumber that there is a lot of slagging from early morning to late at night working as a tradesman.

There is a good bit of banter but everybody expects that, and you give as much as you take on building sites.

This week, it was revealed that over 90% of employees have been bullied at work

I have never worked in an office but I imagine it is a hard set up for people.

It has to be awful feeling to targeted by an individual or group at work, and I don’t think anybody should have to go through that.

Whether it is somebody working above them or below them, nobody should be under pressure to feel unhappy while trying to earn a living.

There is no point suffering and taking abuse at the hands of bullies, a person targeted should make an official complaint and if that doesn’t work they should get out if possible.

Of course there will be down days in every job, but it’s important to like what you do and have some enjoyment in your job.

If you think about it we probably spend more time at work than we do anywhere else, so it’s important not to be miserable all of the time.

There is a big difference between banter and bullying.

We have great craic on the road these days and I loved the craic when I was a plumber too.

For me, the hardest thing about that job that I had to deal with was the early mornings but I am on the opposite end of the scale now, I am going to bed when my former colleagues are getting up.
