Mike Denver column: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are entitled to their privacy

Nobody should be forced to be switched on 24/7 and be exposed to the level of scrutiny and media attention that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had to endure since getting married.

I feel sorry for the newlyweds, while they may be paid out of the UK public purse they still deserve to have a life of their own.

I am not surprised that they have taken matters into their own hands with a legal case citing the treatment they have endured since their wedding.

Harry is a member of the Royal Family who has grown up in the public eye, he must remember the 24/7 spotlight his mother Diana - the late princess of Wales was under and probably has a fear of history repeating itself.

Meghan Markle will know all about paparazzi as a breakout star of the TV show Suits, but even as two huge public figures they are entitled to some normality, peace and quiet within their family.

They only got married in May 2018, so all this pressure must definitely be taking its toll on their relationship as newlyweds. Luckily, the media and paparazzi is on a different level here in Ireland and it is not as aggressive or intrusive.

This country is small and we are fortunate enough to escape constant attention because everyone knows each other and there is a great amount of respect.

In the country music world, we welcome fans looking for autographs and photos but it is still easy to keep our private lives to ourselves.

The great Ollie Canning

Portumna and Galway great Ollie Canning (INPHO/Donall Farmer)

Forget Roger Federer and Serena Williams who are still top of their game at 38 years of age, Galway legend 43-year-old Ollie Canning saved Portumna from being relegated in the Galway Senior Hurling Championship last weekend.

He joined Damien Hayes, aged 37, as they did the parish proud in their last game before retiring.

It is a very sad day for Portumna to see them hanging up their boots because they have done so much for Galway hurling and they will go down as two heroes for the county.

It is disappointing that they never won an All-Ireland and they will be sadly missed.

But while time is the one thing that catches us all, Ollie Canning proved that going the extra mile is possible when you combine skill and sheer dogged determination.

Weddings

People were giving out about men leaving weddings to watch a match this.

All I can say is if Galway were playing a big game while I was attending a wedding, I would definitely be on the sneaking out to watch team!

I regularly play afternoon gigs around Ireland and I ask my friends to report back with the score updates every few minutes.

You can’t beat watching a match live.

Of course you can record or put it on Sky plus, but it is not the same watching back though.

A lot of brides and grooms are bringing in screens to watch GAA, Soccer and Rugby during the reception these days to keep guests together, if anything watching your team win will only add to the atmosphere at the big day, and sure if they loose the guests can focus on the fun of the wedding instead.

A problem shared as they say!

Portugal

Storm Lorenzo was not on my radar this week as I took in the sunshine in Portugal.

I was there with Michael English, The Conquerors, Dominic Kirwan, Derek Ryan, Cliona Hagan and Gerry Guthrie where we took the opportunity to enjoy a few late nights or early mornings - depending on your definition of 4am!

We did a poolside gig in 28 degrees heat on Friday and people were swimming in the pool and dancing in their bikinis as we played.

I am hoping that the weather will be good when we get back and this storm will bring some sunshine after a dreary few days.

Westlife

Kian Egan, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily are from the west so it is definitely time that Westlife announced another gig in Galway.

They have sold out two gigs in Cork’s Páirc Uí Chaoimh already and Galway should be next.

It is nearly 18 months since Ed Sheeran performed here and a concert in Pearse Stadium would be great for the city because they are an amazing band and they have big connections here.

So lads if you are reading - remember the best is in the west!
