Mike Dean lifts the lid on that Mousa Dembele goal 'celebration' during Tottenham vs Aston Villa

Referees get plenty of stick in football.

And one who comes in for more than others is Mike Dean.

He is a flamboyant character with many fans on social media reflecting that he likes to make it "all about him" during matches.

Plenty of internet memes have been made around the way he brandishes a card or points to the penalty spot.

But one incident always springs to mind when discussing the referee's past - Monday, November 3, 2015 at White Hart Lane.

Alasdair Gold's reaction to Jose Mourinho's press conference

Tottenham beat Aston Villa 3-1 in the Monday night clash, but the referee made all the headlines. Not for a red card or a controversial penalty, but for appearing to celebrate a goal.

You all know the one, he played advantage allowing Mousa Dembele to drive into the box and score and as Spurs celebrated it looked like Dean did too, wheeling away waving his finger in the air a number of times.

And the referee has lifted the lid on the 'goal celebration' in an interview to celebrate officiating 500 matches in the top flight.

He said: "I wouldn't say it was a goal celebration, I was celebrating an advantage.

"I kind of got carried away with it, with the whole day really, it is a foul, I've played on and I probably shouldn't have put my arms out."

And Dean stood by the way he referees matches, admitting it was a hobby, rather than a job to him.

He added: "You've got to enjoy yourself, I love the job, that kind of comes out the way I referee the football.

"It's not really a job, it's a hobby and I absolutely love it."

Dean is an avid Tranmere Rovers supporter and he went viral last season when he was spotted celebrating Rovers' play-off semi-final win over Forest Green Rovers last season.
