Mike Bushell favourite to be first Strictly star to crash out of the competition

Strictly Come Dancing has not even started yet but already experts are predicting BBC newsreader Mike Bushell will be the first to fall on the hit entertainment show.

The 53-year-old TV star is one of the 15 celebrities competing to win the glitter ball trophy on the 2019 series of the long running BBC One show.

But he will be the first to screw up on the dance floor according to betting agents - and therefore risks being one of the first to be given the boot by the judges.

The odds have been stacked against Mike, it would seem, due to his accident prone sensibilities - with the star last year accidentally falling into a swimming pool during a live broadcast.

Mike confirmed he was doing the show on BBC Breakfast earlier in the month (BBC)

Ladbrokes bookmakers currently have Mike at 2/1 to suffer some kind of dance based slip up on the opening night of the 2019 season.

Even if he does not falter on the dance floor, it looks like pundits are keeping high hopes for him to win the crown.

He is currently one of the outsiders of the contest with Coral bookmakers marking him 25-1 winner - the same odds as Paralympian Will Bayley, 31.

Although the worst odds have been reserved for veteran presenter Anneka Rice, 60, at 33-1.

Bookies favourites include England footballer Alex Scott, 34, at 5-1, while Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley’s odds look not too bad with the 35-year-old standing with odds at 6-1.

“It won't be long until Strictly is back on our screens and excitement is starting to build over the 17th series of the popular show,” Coral spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said in a statement.

“We make ex-England women's footballer Alex Scott the early favourite and we think she will have all the skills necessary to tackle the challenge and lift the Glitterball Trophy,” Harry added.

Comedian Chris Ramsey, 33, former England goalkeeper David James, 49, BBC Radio 1 host Dev Griffin,  34, and 42-year-old EastEnders star Emma Barton (who plays Honey Mitchell) are also competing.

Model Emma Weymouth, 33, Olympic rower James Cracknell, 47, reality star Jamie Laing, 30, CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual, 19, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Michelle Visage, 50, and YouTube star Saffron Barker, 19, complete the line up of celebs set to star on the show.

The show will launch on 7 September - with Kylie Minogue set to give a star performance as celebrations kick off.
