Mike Brown branded a disgrace as Wales legend vows to go 'balls-out' to defend him

Mike Brown has been condemned as a ‘disgrace’ after the Harlequins full-back’s red card in the win over Wasps.

The 35-year-old could face a long ban over the 44th minute incident that saw him tread on opposition hooker Tommy Taylor’s face. Indeed, it could be the final act of the England international’s 16-year career in Quins’ multi-coloured jersey.

Moving to Newcastle Falcons in the summer, he may even find himself facing a delayed start at his new club.

Criticism over the incident came in immediately, with former Wales international and Lions Test player Gareth Evans tweeting: “Mike Brown #lifeban #disgrace”.

Another social media user called 'a moment of complete madness', while a third referred to it as a horror head stamp.

There were some who felt the Brown accidentally stepped on Taylor, while Quins forwards coach Adam Jones expects the club to go “balls-out” to defend their long-term last line of defence.

The ex-Wales and Lions prop said: "In those situations when you’re being held in it can look a lot worse than it was.

"There was a lot going on as it happened. Let’s wait until next week and see what happens.

"He is gutted. I’m sure the club will go balls-out to defend him as much as we can.

"Hopefully common sense prevails and the different issues with it come through."

Match referee Wayne Barnes watched footage of the incident from all available angles before saying: “It’s just reckless.

“It’s highly reckless and he’s stood down and it’s on someone’s head.

“He’s aware there’s a player round him. It’s not that he’s off balance.

“It’s highly reckless foul play.”

He then sent off Brown.

As he left the field, Brown apologised to the bandaged-up Taylor.

Quins won a crazy game 48-46, with fly-half Marcus Smith scoring 28 points.
