Clippers guard Lou Williams has been in the NBA since 2005. He’s seen and experienced it all throughout his career. That includes a scary run-in with an attempted armed robbery.
But the story had an astonishing twist. Williams convinced a gunman in 2011 not to rob him, and Williams instead treated him to a Christmas Eve meal at McDonald’s.
During Sunday’s broadcast of the Clippers and Knicks, Mike Breen re-told the amazing story as Williams stepped to the free-throw line.
Breen said:
“He does a good job convincing the officials to blow the whistle. One of the stories about him. This was back when he was with the Sixers in 2011. He’s driving his car in Philadelphia on Christmas Eve. He stopped at a light, and a gunman comes up to rob him. Knocks on the window, ready to rob him. And Williams talked him out of it. Part of talking him out of it was he told him who he was. The gunman apparently said to him, ‘Yeah, you do a lot for this community.’ And decided not to hold him up. Williams then had him get in the car, and he took him to McDonald’s. And had a nice, long chat with him about life and what’s going on. Pretty incredible.”
As the story re-surfaced, Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks shared an excerpt from her podcast conversation with Williams about that night.
What a story.
