Mike Ashley withdraws CAT claim against Premier League after Newcastle takeover

Former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has withdrawn his Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) claim against the Premier League.

Thousands of United supporters logged on to watch a live stream of the preliminary hearing of the case on September 29.

Mr Justice Robert Miles heard submissions from the Premier League and Ashley's company St James' Holdings on the dispute, ssome of which had to be heard in private ahead of scheduled arbitration proceedings.

No date was given for a decision to be announced, although the hearing did reveal arbitration was due to commence in the week beginning January 3.

Daniel Jowell QC, representing St James' Holdings, outlined allegations that influence from Qatar-based beIN Sport and 'major' Premier League rivals led to an 'unfair application of the rules' when it came to approving the takeover last year.

The barrister also argued that the unpopular Toon owner had suffered substantial losses in excess of £10m as a result of the delay caused by the Premier League.

However, the takeover which had remained in limbo for 18 months was given the green light on Thursday, the same week as Saudi Arabia lifted its four-and-a-half year ban on beIN Sport.

One day after the Premier League rubber stamped the deal, Ashley decided to withdraw the 'entirety' of his claim against the Premier League.

The withdrawal of claim form published on October 8 on the tribunal's website also confirms there is no order on costs, meaning neither side is liable.
