Mike Ashley's stance on Steve Bruce's future made clear to Newcastle United insiders

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is not set to take any immediate action when it comes to the managerial situation at St James' Park - regardless of what happens in the next couple of games.

Head coach Steve Bruce heads to Watford this weekend without a win to his name this season before an equally testing clash at Wolverhampton Wanderers a week later to take us up to the next international break.

However, Chroniclelive understands that once again Ashley is prepared to give Bruce and his coaching team time to turn things around.

And like last season the club's hierarchy may only consider changing their stance if Newcastle become cut adrift in the relegation zone going into the winter period.

This is similar to last spring when a 3-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion left it looking ominous for Bruce but he was backed by the Sports Direct magnate less than 24 hours after the loss on the South Coast.

In recent weeks, and off the back of a stormy transfer deadline day for both Bruce and the powers that be, which eventually resulted in a statement being released, there were suggestions that Bruce had three games to save his job.

But with finances also a big factor in the situation for Bruce and United, with Ashley knowing he has to write a seven-figure cheque to change boss, he is still not in any real danger from those above him.

Reports that life is chaotic behind the scenes at the training ground has also been played down by some insiders after a suggestion that Dwight Gayle and Graeme Jones clashed last week.

Ashley is watching from a distance and has not attended a game this season.

Bruce last week vowed to fight on as boss regardless of the pressure from fans and insisted that recent unrest would not affect him.

After the 1-1 draw with Leeds he said: "I'm not going to say I enjoy it but I bear their frustrations. I understand.

"I am never going to shy away from it.

"Especially when there's a fight on our hands and we're in it.

"That won't deter me that's for sure."

What is also playing into Bruce's hands at the moment is the uncertainty regarding the club's takeover hopes.

The ownership limbo - with a Middle East consortium watching on - could drag on until the new year.

Were Ashley to get the takeover deal the intention is to leave the choice of next manager to new owners.

Sources close to the owner insist that it would take Newcastle to be left a fair distance behind those in the bottom half for that to change.

Bruce will face the media again on Friday morning but continues to be a lone voice behind the scenes, give or take one or two speakers to broadcast rights holders and the club's official TV channel.

Bruce was at Newcastle's Under-23 defeat at home to Stoke City on Monday night to run the rule over Elliot Anderson and Joe White, with both edging closer to senior action this season.
