Mike Ashley's Sports Direct set to become new Cork GAA sponsor

Mike Ashley's Sports Direct is set to become the new sponsor of Cork GAA, according to reports.

The sports retailer, owned by the Newcastle United chief, is set to be named as the new Cork sponsor on a five-year-deal, according to The Sunday Times.

The deal is reported to be worth around €2 million to the Rebels over the course of the five years, including performance bonuses worth up to €2 million.

Of the bonuses, the county stands to earn an additional €200,000 for an All-Ireland win, and a boot deal is also included.

The report indicates that the new deal is expected to be announced next month ahead of the new inter-county season.

The new deal is set to bring the county's eight-year partnership with Chill Insurance to an end.

Cork endured mixed fortunes on the pitch in 2020, with the county's footballers recording a sensational victory over Kerry in the Munster championship.

But Ecstasy turned into despair in the decider after Ronan McCarthy's charges were stunned by Tipperary as they exit the All-Ireland championship.

In hurling, Kieran Kingston's side were easily dismissed by Waterford, but bounced back with a qualifiers win over Dublin before coming up just short against Tipperary.
