Mike Ashley's private plane returns to UK as Newcastle United fan plants 'sold' sign outside St James' Park

Mike Ashley's plane has returned to the UK as Newcastle United fans wait anxiously for the announcement they hope will end the Sports Direct magnate's tenure in charge of the Magpies.

Whether Ashley was on board is yet to be confirmed with his private jet also previously used by family and business associates.

The plane landed in Luton last night after a flight from the United States yesterday.

Ashley has been in Miami throughout the virus pandemic but staff at Newcastle have had no guidance on takeover talk apart from an assurance they will be the first to know when the deal has gone through.

On a weekend which resulted in a supporter planting a "sold" sign in the ground outside St James' Park, those close to the deal feel that news will emerge at the end of April with the Premier League currently going through the paperwork and processing an owner's and director's test.

Although, sources on the Ashley side insist that exclusivity on the deal for a Middle East consortium runs until mid-May.

Amanda Staveley, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund have maintained their silence and observed the non-disclosure agreements in place on the £300million takeover proposal.
