Mike Ashley's accounts confirm how much he got for loss-making Newcastle United

Mike Ashley has published his accounts which confirm how much he received for Newcastle United.

The accounts are for MASH Holdings, which is 100% owned by Mike Ashley. The entity includes his retail group as well as Newcastle United and the report is for the financial year ending April 26 2020.

It shows that his group increased its pre-tax profit from £185m to £208m for the year, but the revenue of Newcastle United, a subsidiary in the group, dropped from £181.5m to £144m, due principally to reduced ‘media revenue’.

As previously reported, it showed that the club made a pre-tax loss of £26m for the year up to April 2020, compared to a pre-tax profit of £41m the previous year. That was adjusted to a £22.5m loss after taxation credit.

Also in the report was confirmation of the sale of Newcastle United, which Ashley owned through a subsidiary called St James Holdings, and which took place after the reporting period: “The total consideration paid to St James Holdings was £305m. There are no conditions attached to the sale and there is no deferred consideration owing as all payments were made on or before closing the sale.”

There was also a note about the fall in average attendance: “The average attendance for league matches at home decreased from 51,116 to an average of 48,428. This excludes the games played behind closed doors due to Covid-19.”

Later, in a section addressing the new deal with Castore for kits, the report noted: “In addition to becoming the official kit supplier Castore will also take over the Clubs [sic] retail operations.”

Deeper into the report there was a section about efforts to address the club’s environmental impact, which said: “There has been considerable investment at St James Park Stadium, the Club’s Training Ground and Academy."

It then described improvements in lighting, boilers, a borehole, and energy-usage software.

It continued: “The Club is also pleased to confirm that they generated 1,418,726 kilowatts of electricity, saving 362 tCO2e via renewable generation in this period.”

Finally, there was a line about matchday hospitality which said that during the reporting period there was £87,000 of matchday hospitality ‘provided to members of M Ashley’s family.’
