Mike Ashley pictured at St James' Park with Lee Charnley ahead of crunch Newcastle transfer talks

Mike Ashley returned to St James’ Park for the first time this season.

The owner - who is due to hold transfer talks with Steve Bruce - was in the stands for the FA Cup clash against Rochdale.

United’s record in the competition has been terrible during the Ashley era but he watched on as the goals flew in against the League One side.

A crowd of 29,786 watched on as Newcastle plotted their course to round four of the cup.

Bruce had said yesterday:”I am meeting up with the owner in the next couple of days. That is planned.

“As I have said all along, if there is something that can make us better and they are available I will ask the owner, of course.

“He was very supportive in the summer.

“So let’s see what we can get.”
