Mikael Mandron on returning to Sunderland with a brace and why he feels Gills deserved more

Mikael Mandron admitted it was nice to bag a brace against former club Sunderland, but ultimately felt Gillingham deserved more than the point they got from the game at the Stadium of Light.

Mandron twice cancelled out Kyle Lafferty goals - the second of which came in the sixth minute of stoppage time - as Gillingham earned a 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

It was particularly poignant for the Frenchman who began his career in England graduating through Sunderland's academy before leaving the club in 2016.

Reacting to his goals he said after: "I feel we could have got more out of the game. We came here to win and it feels like we could have got a bit more from it.

“I’m of course happy I got a couple of goals, one being so late in the game too.

“It felt good [to get the late goal]. I’ve been looking to get goals for a while, and obviously to come back here and to score at the Stadium of Light it feels really good.”

Mandron failed to start any games for Sunderland, but did make three Premier League appearances for the club from the bench.

Asked if he felt ahead of the game like he had a point to prove, he was nothing but complimentary about the club who gave him his first opportunity.

“Not really," he said. "Every time I go out I give everything I have. Coming here I obviously want to do well, but it didn’t feel any different.

“It feels like home here. I really enjoyed my time here and I was here for a while. I played many games here for the under-23s and a few for the first team as well. This place feels like home.”

If Sunderland feels like home, Gillingham is actually now home for him.

His brace dented Sunderland's promotion hopes as another two dropped points stopped them going third. Gillingham, meanwhile, stay eight points behind the Black Cats, but having lost just one in 17, he feels like they could still yet rival Sunderland for promotion.

He said: “That’s what we’re going for [the play-off places]. We’re only a few points off, so we need to keep getting wins and hopefully we can get in.”
