Mikael Lustig suffers pariah status as Celtic hero is wiped from Gent website

Former Celtic star Mikael Lustig has been made a pariah at Belgian side Gent.

The Swede has been forced to train with the stiffs while the club have also removed all mention of him from the club's website.

Lustig moved from Celtic last summer after capturing 16 trophies – including eight Scottish Premiership titles – in an eight-year spell at the Glasgow giants to forge a new career at ambitious Gent.

But the 33-year-old suffered a disastrous season in Belgium. He was named in a league Flop Team of the Year after losing his place at full back to Alessio Castro-Montes and made just 14 league starts for his new club.

And despite having two years of his contract left in Belgium, Lustig is now training with the kids in the afternoon and wasn't allowed to pose for the club's official team photo for the new season.

Lustig, who has won 82 caps for Sweden, is now in football limbo with Gent.

Sports director Michel Louwagie said: "At the moment, Lustig is training with the reserve team.

"That's the situation with him just now. Tomorrow it could be different - that's life as a football player.

"It's the decision of the manager."

Lustig has attracted interest from clubs in his Swedish homeland, where he hasn't played since leaving Sundsvall 12 years ago to sign for Rosenborg before moving to Glasgow.
