Mikael Lustig set for transfer as Celtic hero's Belgian move turns sour

Celtic hero Mikael Lustig looks set to leave Belgian club Gent after just one season.

The Swede became a cult hero at Celtic Park as he helped the team to eight league titles in a row, earning a reputation for being something of a maverick.

The defender famously stole a policeman's hat while celebrating a goal against Rangers, much to the delight of the Celtic support.

Lustig left last summer though and joined Belgian side Gent on a free transfer, but things haven't worked out as he'd have liked.

The 33-year-old was named in a league Flop Team of the Year after losing his place at full back to Alessio Castro-Montes and making just 14 league starts for Gent.

And he's now dropped further down in their squad after Gent signed Sint-Truiden captain Jordan Botaka, who can also be used as a right back.

Now Lustig has been told he's got no future at the club after featuring in just two games this year for Gent, who were in second place in the league when the Belgian season was called.

It's reported in Belgium that Lustig may now weigh up a return to his native Sweden, where he hasn't played since leaving Sundsvall in 2008 to sign for Rosenborg before moving to Glasgow.
