Mikael Lustig's Celtic future latest as AIK director provides transfer update

AIK sporting director Bjorn Wesstrom believes his side aren't any closer to agreeing a deal for impending free agent Mikael Lustig.

The Celtic defender is free to talk to other clubs with his Parkhead deal set to expire in the summer but the Swedish side are playing the waiting game.

Lustig is being chased by AIK and he could depart Parkhead after seven-and-a-half years with the Premiership champions.

But his Celtic career isn't dead in the water and interim boss Neil Lennon could hold the key to the right-back's future.

Neil Lennon fears Scottish Cup jinx as Celtic boss makes bizarre request

Brendan Rodgers brought in Jermey Toljan in January but Lustig has been reinstated to the starting XI and could earn a new deal if the Irishman is offered the Celtic job on a permanent basis.

Celtic face a significant summer rebuild and a one-year extension for the long-serving star isn't off the table.

But Wesstrom remains hopeful he can convince Lustig that a return to his homeland would be the right move.

Wesstrom told Studio AIK." I have talked to Mikael Lustig but we are not so close right now.

Vakoun Bayo suffers Celtic injury nightmare as striker set for spell on the sidelines

"If it is close then you discuss details and plans, and you talk to the coach, and we are not there yet.

"What he needs to decide first and foremost is whether he should remain at Celtic or not, and I understand that they have a job to do, Celtic and himself.

"When they have decided on that future, then we will think about how our interest is."
