Mihai Popescu set for Hearts exit as Romanian defender told he can leave Tynecastle

Hearts have told Mihai Popescu he can leave the club before the end of the month, according to a report.

The Romanian centre back hasn't been involved this season and played just 23 times last season as Hearts regained their place in the Premiership.

And now the former St Mirren loanee has been told he can leave Tynecastle on a free if he finds a club in the coming weeks, with Robbie Neilson not having space for him in his squad.

The Edinburgh Evening News report Hearts are looking to trim the surplus from their squad and Popescu is one of the fringe players who can go.

That’s despite him having a year left on his contract but the 28-year-old is completely out-of-favour at the club.

Hearts have also reportedly told Jordan Roberts he can leave there’s bound to be interest from Scotland in both players.

St Mirren had wanted to bring Popescu back to the club after his successful loan spell in 2019 but Dinamo Bucharest weren’t willing to do a deal.

Hearts then brought him to Edinburgh last summer but he’s now set to leave again.
