Miguel spends 90 minutes in jail for drink driving

R&B singer Miguel was arrested early on Thursday morning under suspicion of drink-driving. The artist spent about 90 minutes in jail after being stopped by police in a seaside district of Los Angeles.

Miguel was allegedly speeding through Marina Del Rey after 2:30am, in a BMW with illegally tinted windows. Once the car was pulled over, a California highway patrol officer conducted sobriety tests, which Miguel failed. The singer also failed a breath test, a police spokeswoman told the LA Times: he was found to have a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.10 – 100mg/100ml – just over the state's legal limit. (As in the UK, California's maximum blood-alcohol content for drivers is 0.08 – or 80mg/100ml.)

Miguel, whose full name is Miguel Jontel Pimentel, was booked at around 3.30am. He was released at 5am, posting $5,000 (£3,200) bail. A court date has been scheduled for 9 September.

The 27-year-old has not released a statement about the incident. Instead, Miguel posted a photo from what appears to be a home renovation. "#artdealerchic, soon," he wrote.

Kaleidoscope Dream, Miguel's most recent album, was one of the Guardian's favourite LPs of 2012. Alongside the Grammy-winning single Adorn, there's a song called How Many Drinks: "How many drinks would it take you to leave with me?" Miguel asks. "Yeah, it's just a short drive home from here."
