Miguel Almiron to see specialist in Spain after suffering injury for Newcastle

Miguel Almiron is due to travel to Spain to see a specialist to determine how long he will be out for after suffering a hamstring injury in Newcastle's win against Southampton.

The 25-year-old pulled up after the hour mark at St James' Park and left the field in tears after being handed a standing ovation by the home fans as he was replaced by Christian Atsu.

Almiron limped through the mixed zone post-match but did not require any assistance or a set of crutches getting out of the stadium. ChronicleLive understands the injury is 'not too bad' - Almiron won't need an operation - and the club's record signing is in good spirits.

The Paraguayan is due to visit a specialist in Spain to formally confirm the nature of the injury and whether it is a partial muscle tear or a complete muscle tear.

Almiron is not expected to play again this season and his appointment will give a rough time frame on how long he will be out for.

The forward hopes to be fit to play at the Copa America - Paraguay's Group B opener against Qatar takes place on June 16 -  and is keeping in regular contact with Rafa Benitez and the club's medical team.

"It is his (Almiron) first injury of this type," Benitez said after Saturday's win against Soutampton. "He was doing well and the fans love him.

"He was working very hard and it is not easy for a player who was doing well in another country, at a massive club in front of 52,000 fans, to then get injured and maybe have to be out for the rest of the season."
