Miguel Almiron's international boss delivers update on winger's injury, as he's named in Copa America squad

Miguel Almiron’s recovery from a hamstring injury is nearly complete and he will join up with the Paraguay squad for the Copa America next month.

Almiron missed the final three matches of the season after pulling up during the Southampton home win which guaranteed the club’s Premier League safety. He departed the field in tears amid fears that it may have been a serious injury that would rule him out of this summer’s tournament in Brazil.

But Almiron’s rehab has progressed well and he has been named by national team boss Eduardo Berizzo in the 40-man provisional squad for the tournament.

Miguel Almiron posts encouraging injury update from Newcastle training ground

At a press conference to announce the squad Berizzo hailed Almiron as his country’s “talisman” and confirmed that Newcastle had passed on positive news about his recovery.

“With regard to Miguel Almirón, he has gone through all the recovery processes and it has gone very well. The report of his Club is that he has already been in contact with the ball, he is already doing speed actions and he already supports the training load with no pain.”

His rehab process will be taken on by Paraguay later this week, having been the responsibility of Newcastle until now. “Until the 16th, Miguel will be part of that recovery carried out by his Club and will then be made available to us,” Berizzo said.
