Miguel Almiron may be exempted from quarantine as Newcastle sweat on qualifiers

Newcastle may not have to do without Miguel Almiron for crucial fixtures in March after it emerged the Government may suspend quarantine rules for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Almiron will be picked for Paraguay's games in Chile and at home to Colombia on March 24 and 29 which, depending on travel plans, could rule him out of Newcastle's matches against Spurs and Burnley that month.

Chile and Paraguay are both on the "red list" of countries where anyone travelling into the UK must isolate in a Government-approved hotel for ten days.

But the Times reports that the Government will consider exemptions on a case-by-case basis based on detailed travel plans provided by clubs.

Newcastle may look at putting on a private jet to help ensure Almiron's journey is COVID safe, while they could also provide an itinerary that illustrates he won't be mixing with the general public.

A Whitehall source, quoted in the Times, said: "What we know is that players have been much more at risk of transmission in domestic situations so if the clubs can demonstrate that their players will be effectively kept in bubbles, then there may be some flexibility but much will depend on the state of the virus in the countries concerned closer to the time."
