Miguel Almiron backed to impress with ‘fresh start’ at Newcastle United

Former Leeds and Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny believes Miguel Almiron can take centre stage for Newcastle this season. A stellar pre-season saw the Paraguayan net six goals to stake his claim for a place in the Premier League opener.

Almiron’s future looked uncertain earlier this year, with his agent, Daniel Campos, demanding summer talks in January. However, a renaissance during the back end of 2021-22 has continued throughout the summer and the 28-year-old is starting to look like the player Newcastle thought they signed three-and-a-half years ago.

Eddie Howe has helped Joelinton, Ryan Fraser, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth turn their Toon careers around - and Almiron is backed to follow suit. Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny insisted the forward has “a fresh start” on Tyneside and has backed him to impress this season.

“Six goals, wow,” he said. “They are pre-season games so they don’t mean a great deal but there is nothing better than getting them goals and getting your confidence up. It’s a new era at Newcastle and a fresh start.

“They are going to be pushing near that top half of the table and I don’t see why Almiron can’t be a part of that. He has had a cracking pre-season and that is what it is for, to get fit and get confidence. We will have to see how he does next season.”
