Miguel Almiron back in the gym after injury scare as he prepares for Newcastle return

Miguel Almiron may not be yet with his Newcastle United teammates for the club's training camp but that doesn't mean he's not preparing for the new season.

The forward has been given some extra time to recuperate after playing for Paraguay in the Copa America.

The 27-year-old's tournament was cut short during a game with Uruguay after he left the pitch in tears with what was later confirmed as a muscle edema injury.

It brought to an end to the season for Almiron - in which he featured 39 times for Newcastle plus a further six times for his home country - which culminated in the birth of his first child.

So it's perhaps no surprise that he's been afforded some extra time off before joining up with his club teammates.

Yet far from a full-blown vacation, Almiron has been back in the gym.

He posted on social media part of his workout routine as he stretched and carried out some weight exercises.

Toon head coach Steve Bruce has spoken about those players yet to return to the club fold.

Speaking from the York pre-season training camp he told NUFC.co.uk: "It's staggered for some but obviously some players need a rest.

"But [pre-season] is a vitally important time.

"All players with have a minimum of three weeks [rest] - Miggy has been at the Copa America and there are still one or two resting up, and rightly so after what they've been through.

"It's important for them that they get a rest and rightly so."
