
Mandarin ducks have migrated to Shitara, Aichi Prefecture, to overwinter in the upper reaches of Toyo River, entertaining bird watchers with their vivid orange and dark green feathers.
As many as about 400 mandarin ducks usually come to the area between November and March. However, because of the warmer weather this year, many ducks started to arrive in mid-December, when it became colder.
"The ducks are very skittish, so please watch over them quietly," said Tetsu Ito, a 70-year-old caretaker at the Oshidori no Sato, an observation facility on the riverbank.
