Migrants, bosses urged to register jobs

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has urged Thai employers and their migrant workers to strictly comply with the registration process and complete it by the deadline, government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd says.

The prime minister's call comes as the Labour Ministry resumes its One Stop Service (OSS) and nationality verification centres for migrant workers Monday.

Until June 30, all 80 OSS centres nationwide will process the registration of the remaining migrant workers from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia who have not yet completed it.

A total of 1,320,035 migrant labourers nationwide (about 96%) registered with the ministry from Feb 5 to March 31, according to the Labour Ministry's figures.

They either did it online or submitted documents to the provincial offices of employment.

About 960,000 have already secured work permits and will be allowed to stay until 2020 and the remaining have until June this year to get it done or face deportation.

Those who have their nationalities verified are required to undergo health exams to obtain medical certificates which will be used to secure visas, ID cards, and temporary work permits at the OSS centres.

Migrants who have not passed the verification process will be required to go through the process first to receive passports before going through further steps at the centres.

Lt Gen Sansern said the prime minister expects to receive cooperation from employers and workers as this joint effort would be instrumental in the government's efforts to streamline the management of migrant workers and ensuring their well-being.

"The prime minister also urged them to do it as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute rush," Lt Gen Sansern said.

Each of 76 provincial offices of employment will run an OSS centre for migrant workers, while Bangkok has four OSS centres including one at the Labour Ministry.
