A migrant woman died after being hit by at least two vehicles while trying to cross a border highway earlier this month, according to a new report.
The incident took place on August 17 near Texas' Bridge of the Americas, Border Report detailed. Then, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent patrolling the area saw a man near a concertina wire barricade next to the Rio Grande.
The agent shouted at the man, who proceeded to run into the grass near the river. Shortly after a woman exited from a canal and ran toward a fence. The agent told her to stop in Spanish, but she proceeded to climb the fence and then run across the highway, where she was hit by a car.
The agent then approached the location and saw another car getting close to her. It did not stop, harming her further. She was declared dead at the scene. CBP noted that the El Paso Police Department is investigating the incident.
Migrants regularly die while attempting to cross into the U.S. In April, a Mexican woman died after getting stuck upside down while trying to jump over the border fence.
The 32-year-old woman, identified as Griselda Verduzco Armenta, from Sinaloa, was found dangling in a harness on a section of the fence off of International Road and Kings Highway near Douglas, Arizona, late Monday, April 11. It wasn't immediately clear how long she remained stuck to the fence.
"The woman reportedly climbed onto the top of the International Border wall and when attempting to maneuver down on the US side via a harness similar to rappelling, her foot/leg became entangled and she was trapped upside down for a significant amount of time," Cochise County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
