Migrant dies trying to reach UK as French officials find boat filled with water

A migrant has died after attempting to cross the English Channel to get to the UK, French authorities have confirmed.

The Maritime Prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea said one person was found dead on the beach of Wissant, near Calais, on Thursday morning following the discovery of a boat filled with water.

Two other people were found suffering from hypothermia.

French authorities said they were treated by emergency services before being taken to a local hospital.

It comes after another migrant died attempting the dangerous crossing on Wednesday.

It is believed the person was unconscious when they were pulled from the water and pronounced dead as rescuers returned to the dock.

Another person has been reported missing.

Speaking on Thursday, a Home Office spokesman said: "These deaths in the Channel are devastating and our thoughts are with the victims' family and friends at this time.

"It is another reminder of the extreme dangers of crossing the Channel in small boats and how vital it is that the French do everything possible to stop people leaving French beaches in the first place.

"We welcome France's commitment to work with us to prevent 100% of crossings but as today's tragic events shows, it is vital they go further and faster to achieve this.

"We are fixing the broken asylum system to deter people from making this deadly and unnecessary journey."

French authorities say more than 400 people were rescued during a French-led rescue operation in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais on Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

UK authorities on Tuesday rescued or intercepted 456 people who had navigated busy shipping lanes from France in small boats.

According to data compiled by the PA news agency, prior to that at least 19,756 people had already reached the UK so far this year, bringing the total to more than 20,200.

This is more than double the total for the whole of 2020.

Last year 15-month-old Artin Iran-Nejad died alongside his parents Rasoul Iran-Nejad and Shiva Mohammad Panahi, as well as his three siblings, when the boat that was supposed to get them to the UK capsized.

His family had sold their house before leaving Iran and paid £14,000 to get on the boat, with a further £8,200 due from them when they arrived safely in the UK.

The family reportedly boarded the ferry from northern France after being smuggled from Turkey and then Italy.
