Vivianne Miedema strikes but Arsenal Women frustrated by Reading

It was a frustrating afternoon for Arsenal Women who were held in a 1-1 draw against Reading in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Former Gunner Lauren Bruton opened the scoring for the Royals in the fifth minute but it was cancelled out by Vivianne Miedema’s finish just before half-time.

When the sides last met in September, the Gunners ran riot beating Reading 6-1 but the contest at the Madejski Stadium was a different encounter.

The Royals took the lead from a set piece in the opening five minutes when Bruton turned in Emma Mitchell’s free-kick.

Reading controlled Joe Montemurro’s side with a high press but the Gunners eventually equalised when Jill Roord’s header was saved by Grace Moloney before Miedema tapped in the rebound to score her 12th goal of the season.

The Arsenal boss made three changes at the break including Beth Mead, who provided more creativity for his side.

Miedema had a chance when she blasted over from a Mead cross and the Gunners seemed to be in the ascendency but were unable to capitalise.

A serious leg injury for Reading’s Kristine Leine saw her stretchered off and neither side made another clear-cut chance despite the lengthy period of injury time.
