Midwife mum who collected 500 cloth nappies is Instagram star with 22,000 followers

A mum has become an Instagram influencer after building up a collection of 500 cloth nappies from all over the world.

Mum-of-four Cecilia Leslie took up the habit in a bid to find eco-friendly alternatives to disposable nappies.

But the full-time midwife now has more than 22,000 followers on social media.

The 32-year-old, from Edinburgh, wanted to reduce plastic waste and save money but her interest soon became a hobby.

She started to look further afield for nappies and spent more than £150 on one custom design.

Cecilia said: “I fully intended for my use of cloth to be solely functional but once I started, it became more of a case of wanting all the pretty patterns.

“I joined quite a few communities online, where there was a lot of hype about having all the prints. I’ve got a lot of limited editions, which sell out quickly.

Scots mum pregnant at 14 admits 'I'd never have forgiven myself if I'd got rid of my baby'

“It became a bit of a game trying to track them down – I used to source them from Canada, Australia and the USA.

“I paid £60 for a limited edition print that TotsBots brought out when Prince George was born.

“And I once paid £160 for a pair of limited edition Bumgenius nappies – there were only 100 made.

“Some brands will launch a collection a couple of times a year, with about five or six prints each time, and I would buy all five in one go.

“I’ve also been known to buy five of the same print if it’s one I particularly love.

“I do get some negative comments about the size of my collection.

“Yes, it’s more than I need, but those nappies were bought at independent shops, so it’s keeping people in jobs, and I use every single nappy I own – none of them just sits on the shelf.

“It’s not producing landfill – once Isaac grows out of them I’ll sell them on and give mums a chance to have a really good nappy in excellent condition.”

The craze – dubbed “cloth bumming” – has led to some fans collecting nappies like others collect handbags, with limited editions resold at nearly 10 times the retail price.

Another mum to buy into the trend is 23-year-old Nicola Vandenbrouck, whose son Drew is 18 months old.

Nicola, from Devon, said: “We have been cloth-bumming since he was 10 months old.

“I only started cloth-bumming for the pretty colours.

“It’s not just about the eco-side of it but also the cool patterns and colour.

“I have about 40 at the moment.

“I spend roughly £20- £30 on new nappies a month.

“They’re mostly second-hand but sometimes I buy the odd new one.

“I am really enthusiastic about cloth-bumming and will tell anyone who will listen about it.

“We need brighter, more colourful things in our life.”
