Sommar: Everything we know about Hereditary director Ari Aster's new horror film, from cast to plot

All eyes are on the next project from filmmaker Ari Aster following his acclaimed horror drama Hereditary which terrified and wowed audiences in equal measure to whip up an impressive $80m at the global box office (and counting).

Indie distributor A24 is sticking with Aster for the film which will be titled Sommar, a Kill List-style film that starts out as one genre and ends up firmly wedged in horror. Only, instead of crime gangster flick, Aster’s film is described as a summer road-trip movie enjoyed by a young woman and her boyfriend until they fall prey to a local pagan cult in Sweden.

Separating Hereditary from the endless stream of other horror films – other than actually being scary – was its cast (Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and Ann Dowd). He looks to match it again with Midsommar having signed up Lady Macbeth star Florence Pugh who confirmed the news during a Television Critics Association (TCA) panel for forthcoming BBC show Little Drummer Girl.

Joining Pugh is Jack Reynor and Will Poulter who both starred in Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit with Collider reporting William Jackson Harper of The Good Place fame may also be set to star.

Aster himself describes his new film as “a dark break-up movie that becomes a horror film.”

Midsommar will be released on 16 August.
