Legendary Australian rock band Midnight Oil will perform in Canberra next year at Stage 88.

The Canberra gig was officially announced on Friday - the band will perform in the national capital on Tuesday, April 19.

It is part of their 14-date Resist tour on the back of their new album of the same name.

Publicity for the tour promises the band will be performing "classic Midnight Oil songs from across their repertoire while also showcasing some urgent new works".

The new album includes the single Rising Seas which "tackles the climate crisis in typically uncompromising fashion".

Peter Garrett, the former Labor Member for Kingsford Smith, will turn 69 three days before the Canberra show.

Next year is the 45th anniversary of the band's formation.

"We hope everyone who hears this album and gets to one of the shows will come away charged up about the planet's future, saying, 'Why stop now'?" Garrett said.

"Midnight Oil calls for governments to urgently take serious actions that reduce carbon pollution. This tour will embrace best practices for emission reductions and offsetting.

"A portion of proceeds will also be set aside to support organisations seeking to elevate the existential threat posed by the climate crisis."

The Canberra show is being promoted as a "licensed all-ages" gig.

Every patron must have a ticket regardless of age, and under-18 patrons must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult with their own ticket.
