Midnight fireworks in west end explained as Glasgow celebrates Chinese New Year

Lockdown means that nights are quieter than usual here in the city - but last night (Thursday), Glasgow erupted in sound in colour with fireworks spotted in the sky.

The noise shortly after midnight prompted many of you to jump online to ask what was going on, particularly in the west end where the bangs could be heard in Partick, Yorkhill and beyond.

Commenting on a community Facebook group, one puzzled person wondered if they were missing out on a party, asking: “Anyone know what the fireworks were about? Ahm no girnin, just wanted to know what I’m missing out on!”

Well, Glasgow, there’s a simple explanation; February 12 marks Chinese New Year, and specifically the Year of the Ox for 2021.

Locals celebrated with midnight fireworks displays, with colourful rockets spotted on the lawn of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and at Glasgow Harbour, to name just a few.

Scottish law states that fireworks can’t be set off between 11pm and 7am, except for special occasions that include Bonfire Night, when the cut-off is midnight, and Hogmanay, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut-off is 1am.

So there you go - a little glimmer of fun as we all power through lockdown. All we can say is kung hei fat choy, Glasgow!
