Midlothian's landmark church building from the 1800s could be a family home

A former church manse could be turned into a family home under new plans lodged with Midlothian Council.

A planning application for West Street Hall Development Ltd has been lodged to turn the manse which served Penicuik’s first Free Church congregations into a four-bedroom home.

An application for listed building consent has also been lodged for the Category B listed building, which is listed as currently being used as an office.

The manse was built next to the Category C listed West Street Hall, which was the first church of Penicuik’s Free Church congregation, formed in 1843.

When the congregation outgrew the hall, it moved to a new site, establishing Penicuik South Church.

The manse is thought to have been built around 1860 and has in the past been used as a police station and copper craft work.

Last year, the manse and hall were put on the market by the Church of Scotland for an asking price of around £200,000.

The plans for the new house have been lodged online with Midlothian Council.
