Midfield generals Brian Fenton and David Moran could avoid each other in final

Aidan O'Mahony expects midfield generals Brian Fenton and David Moran to avoid each other in Sunday’s All-Ireland final.

Rather than pairing off, O’Mahony reckons that Jack Barry will pick up Dublin powerhouse Fenton, with Moran on Michael Darragh Macauley if the Ballyboden St Enda’s man holds his place.

“I think Jack Barry and Fenton have marked each other the last two times,” says ex-Kerry defender O’Mahony. “I think Macauley has been on David.

“I think both managers will feel that if they put Fenton on David they'll cancel each other out and I think both teams need both players to be on the ball.

“So I can't see them marking each other. I think you'll probably see Macauley on David and you'll see Jack Barry or someone like Jack Sherwood on Fenton.”

Although Barry’s Kerry career hasn’t quite taken off just yet, he has fared well on Fenton in the past, most recently in the counties’ League meeting in Tralee last March.

O’Mahony added: “When you're not involved in the camp you don't know who is going well or who isn't.

“That is the beauty about Kerry this year, Jack Sherwood came on the last day and had a massive game.

“That's what Dublin have had for years, bringing on the likes of McManamon, Costello, and Kerry have the likes of those players coming in as well. They're actually making a difference when they come on.

“That's what we’re always talking about when we're coaching, subs have to come on and make a difference. Jack, Tommy the last day, they made a massive difference.

“On the other side of that I have no doubt Dublin will have players geared towards marking them as well when they come on.

“I think nowadays if you're going to play Dublin, the team you finish with probably needs to be as strong as the team you start with.”
