Midea air coolers capitalise on pollution

Mr Liu, right, and Henry Cheng, general manager of the Asean AC product division of Midea Group.

China's Midea Residential Air Conditioner wants to continue its significant growth in the Thai market by touting its products' ability to filter PM2.5 pollution.

Last year Midea saw revenue growth of 54% in Thailand, even as the overall air conditioner market dropped 8.3%.

Midea is the No.1 air conditioner exporter in the world, with residential and commercial products holding 28% and 11.5% market share in China, respectively.

Toni Liu, senior manager of Midea Residential Air Conditioner, attributed the growth to the company owning a large manufacturing firm that can make every crucial part needed to manufacture products, leading to lower costs than competitors for products imported into Thailand.

"Midea also launches new products constantly to meet the ever-changing needs of customers," Mr Liu said.

"We plan to improve more than five series of inverter air conditioners."

Midea uses robotic arms for 80% of the manufacturing process and can finish assembling an air conditioner in just 30 minutes, he said.

This allows the company to manufacture up to 6 million air conditioners a year.

"Our growth has benefited from a slowdown for many air conditioner brands in Thailand," said Mr Liu.

"Thais are also more open to Chinese products such as Huawei, for example."

He said the air pollution crisis is causing Thais to look for air conditioners that can protect them from minuscule dust particles, a feature Midea's products provide.

The air conditioners use "Air Magic" technology and a dual filtration system that traps and filters dust as small as PM2.5.

"Apart from the filtration system, we also have a flash cooling system that will help cool down a room in just 30 seconds as well as a gear shift system where customers can choose the power level of their air conditioning system," said Mr Liu.
