Middlesex have sacked head coach Stuart Law after three seasons in the role.
The club have struggled since winning the County Championship in 2016. They were relegated the following season and will still play in Division Two next year.
There has been plenty of senior management turnover at Middlesex this season. Richard Goatley, the CEO who appointed Law, stepped down due to ill health in the summer and was replaced by Andrew Cornish.
Angus Fraser, the long-time director of cricket, saw his role moved in a restructure, meaning Law reported directly to Cornish. Now the head coach has lost his job too, despite being under contract.
Law, who enjoyed a prolific first-class career in England and Australia that would have seen him play many more than a single Test in the Baggy Green in any other era, coached the West Indies and Bangladesh before joining Middlesex ahead of the 2019 season. His time in charge has been severely disrupted by Covid-19.
While some players found Law’s style a little direct and they endured a difficult season, failing to reach the knockout stages in either white-ball competition and finding themselves in Division Three for the latter stages of the County Championship, there were signs of significant progress from a promising young group of players when they won four first-class matches in a row.
Ethan Bamber, Luke Hollman, Martin Andersson and Blake Cullen are among the exciting young players at the club. In addition, the signings of Mark Stoneman and Shaheen Shah Afridi represented significant coups after the departures of Nick Gubbins and Steven Finn.
It is expected that bowling coach Alan Coleman will be put in charge on an interim basis, before a full-time appointment is made ahead of the 2022 season.
